Following the second combined voyage of US and Canadian warships across the Taiwan Strait in as many months, China declared on Thursday that its troops were “on constant high alert.” The Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class frigate, HMCS Ottawa, and the USS Rafael Peralta, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, made a “routine” passage across the strait on Wednesday, according to the US Navy.

Senior Colonel Shi Yi, the Eastern Theatre Command spokesman for China, stated in a statement that “troops in the theatre remain on constant high alert and will resolutely protect national sovereignty, security, as well as regional peace and stability.”

Shi denounced the most recent transit as “public hype” and declared that its air and naval forces had “trailed their entire course.”

The ships’ transit follows the September 9 passage of two US and Canadian warships across the narrow strait between the island and mainland China.

Beijing has become enraged because of the United States and its Western allies’ increased “freedom of navigation” naval vessel incursions of the disputed South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait to demonstrate that they are international waters.

In a statement, the Seventh Fleet stated that the transit had taken place “through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State” and in compliance with international law.

Taiwan’s defence ministry stated on Thursday that “the situation was normal” even though it kept an eye on the crossing on Wednesday night.

As relations have deteriorated recently, China, which regards Taiwan as its own territory that it hopes to conquer one day, has increased political and military pressure on the self-governing island.

China flew 103 aircraft around Taiwan in a 24-hour period in September, a move Taipei referred to as “a recent high.”
