On Friday, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would move a trust vote in the Delhi Assembly on February 17, 2024, to counter accusations of wrongdoing related to the Delhi liquor policy case. The Enforcement Directorate previously summoned Kejriwal for the 6th time for questioning about the case of Delhi Liquor policy. He is also due to appear in front of the court and explain his reasons for his previous 5 skips to the ED.

Kejriwal has also accused the BJP of deliberately attempting to ‘topple’ his government and has stated this move as a “show of strength” against the allegations. On the other hand, The Bhartiya Janata Party denies any involvement with the ED’s ongoing investigation and considers it to be impartial.

The Aam Aadmi Party currently holds a comfortable majority in the Assembly (62 out of 70 seats). The debate on the trust vote motion is currently underway in the Delhi Assembly.

The Delhi Liquor Policy case

The Delhi liquor policy case, also known as LiquorGate, revolves around alleged irregularities in the Delhi government’s Excise Policy 2021-22. The policy faced backlash and was withdrawn in July 2022. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are investigating potential financial irregularities. Kejriwal and his AAP government deny any wrongdoing, calling the probe politically motivated. He stated, “This ED summon is also illegal like the previous summon issued by the agency. ED should withdraw this summon as it is politically motivated. I have lived my life with honesty and transparency. I have nothing to hide.”
