Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud highlighted the critical importance of adopting a green lifestyle to address climate change during the foundation stone laying ceremony for new court buildings in Delhi’s Karkardooma, Shastri Park, and Rohini on Tuesday. He emphasised that the recent extreme weather events in the capital, including unprecedented heatwaves and record-breaking rainfall, underscore the urgent need for climate-responsive infrastructure.

“This year, Delhi experienced its hottest recorded weather. Our infrastructure must reflect the reality we live in – climate change can no longer be ignored. One crucial step is to incorporate a green lifestyle into our daily lives, which includes reducing carbon emissions,” said CJI Chandrachud.

The Chief Justice expressed his satisfaction that the new GRIHA-rated court buildings will focus on mitigating heat islands and reducing their environmental footprint. The Green Rated Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) provides a framework for evaluating a building’s performance against national environmental benchmarks.

CJI Chandrachud further stated, “Court premises, like all buildings, are not just made of bricks and concrete. They embody hope and are built to realize the virtues of justice and the rule of law. Every case filed before us carries the hope for justice. By investing in the safety, accessibility, and comfort of our judges, lawyers, and litigants, we build more than just an efficient system – we create a just and inclusive system.”

The new court complexes are expected to enhance the efficiency of the judiciary, reduce case backlogs, and provide a dignified environment for all stakeholders. CJI Chandrachud reiterated that the judicial system serves no power but the Constitution and is dedicated solely to the litigants, functioning as essential public service providers.

In conclusion, he expressed hope that the new court buildings would honour the judiciary’s rich legacy while embracing modern advancements to enhance efficiency and uphold justice.
