Chhattisgarh Dy CM Vijay Sharma Attacks Congress Over Caste Census Delay

Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma has hit out at the Congress, questioning why the party never conducted a caste census during its long rule at the Centre.
Speaking to the media, Sharma said, “I want to ask the Congress through this platform—when Nehru was PM for 16 years, why was there no caste census? Indira Gandhi ruled for 15 years, but no caste census happened. Manmohan Singh was PM for 10 years, Rajiv Gandhi for 5 years… yet, they never did it. Now, after all these years, they want to take credit for it?”
His statement comes at a time when caste census has become a major political issue. While the Congress has recently supported the demand for a caste census, Sharma said the party was in power for decades but never took any steps to implement it.
Accusing the Congress of hypocrisy, the BJP leader said the party was now trying to take credit for something it ignored for years. The debate over the caste census has heated up, with several parties demanding better representation for OBCs, Dalits and Adivasis.
Earlier, the Congress had passed a resolution for OBC, Dalit and tribal reservation in private educational institutions, as well as updating caste data for stronger reservation policies. Meanwhile, the Modi government has already decided to include a caste count in the upcoming census.
