In a major encounter in the forests under the National Park area of Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, 31 Maoists and two security personnel were killed, police reported on Sunday. The Maoist death toll, initially confirmed as 12, was later revised to 31 by Bastar IG P. Sundarraj. The operation was ongoing as of Sunday noon.
“This gunfight resulted in the deaths of two jawans—one from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and another from the Special Task Force (STF)—while two other personnel sustained injuries,” said IG Sundarraj.
The incident comes just a week after security forces killed eight Maoists in another anti-Maoist operation in the same district on January 31. That operation involved a joint team of DRG, STF, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action). The offensive was launched on Friday following intelligence reports about the presence of Maoist cadres from the ‘West Bastar division’ in the area.
These intensified operations align with the central government’s commitment to eliminating Naxalism by 2026, a goal Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated on January 6. His statement followed a deadly Maoist attack in Bijapur, where eight DRG jawans and a driver were killed after their vehicle was targeted with an IED on the Bedre-Kutru Road. The jawans, returning from a joint operation involving forces from Dantewada, Narayanpur, and Bijapur, were ambushed in what was described as the deadliest Maoist strike on security forces in the last two years.
A similar tragic incident occurred on April 26, 2023, when ten police personnel and a civilian driver were killed in a Maoist IED blast targeting a convoy in Dantewada district.
Reacting to the recent loss of lives, Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “It is impossible to put this sorrow into words, but I assure you that the sacrifice of our soldiers will not go in vain.”
