Gautam Gambhir became head coach of the Indian cricket team on July 9, 2024, with full-fledged authority. Previously, Gambhir worked with IPL teams Lucknow Supergiants and Kolkata Knight Riders, where he led Kolkata Knight Riders to a title victory in 2024.

Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach was disastrous. The Indian team lost a bilateral series against Sri Lanka for the first time in 36 years, and following that, they were whitewashed by New Zealand in a Test series for the first time in 70 years. Most recently, India lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years.

Who is Mr. Fix-it?

After the defeat in Melbourne, the Indian dressing room has descended into chaos. Coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly issued an ultimatum to the players. With Rohit Sharma struggling with very poor form, many players in the team, all eyeing the captain’s spot, are openly claiming that they would be the future captain of the team. One senior member of the team, who has shown a desire to be the interim captain, is openly portraying himself as “Mr. Fix-it,” suggesting he will take on the role until the young guns are deemed worthy of captaincy.

Is Ashwin’s retirement also a result of factionalism in the Indian team?

Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement in the middle of the series hints at unrest within the Indian dressing room. His father’s statement that “his son was being humiliated” suggests this could have been a key factor behind Ashwin’s abrupt decision to retire from all formats of the game. This statement further strengthens the claims that everything is not well in the Indian team.

Reports also indicate a growing divide between Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma, with differing opinions on many issues contributing to the tension.
