Patna: Eighteen people killed and dozens injured in a massive stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday evening. The incident, which took place amid a massive crowd going to attend the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival, has sparked outrage and demands for accountability. Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Dilip Jaiswal has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, believing the chaos may have been pre-planned.

Dilip Jaiswal talking to ANI said, “This is a very sad incident. This tragedy needs to be investigated. The sudden panic among the people… there is a smell of conspiracy in this. The real picture will be clear only after investigation.”

The tragedy has also been strongly criticised by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who has accused the Indian Railways of mismanagement. “It is a big failure of the railways, which led to the death of so many people. The railway minister should take responsibility for this,” Yadav said. However, Jaiswal dismissed Yadav’s remarks, saying, “Lalu has grown old now. He doesn’t even know what he is saying.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Railways has formed a two-member committee to investigate the stampede. The committee comprises Northern Railway’s Principal Chief Commercial Manager (PCCM) Narsingh Deo and Principal Chief Security Commissioner (PCSC) Pankaj Gangwar. The committee has started a high-level inquiry (HAG). All video footage from the station has been secured to help in the investigation.

The stampede occurred around 10 pm on February 15 when thousands of devotees had gathered at the station to leave for Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh. Eyewitnesses said a passenger lost his balance and slipped on the stairs leading to platforms 14 and 15, triggering a chain reaction that led to the fatal accident.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Elderly victims: Aha Devi (79), Sheela Devi (50), Krishna Devi (40), Shanti Devi (40)
  • Women and children: Pinki Devi (41), Poonam Devi (40), Lalita Devi (35), Suruchi (11), Pooja Kumar (8), Riya Singh (7)
  • Other victims: Vyom (25), Vijay Sah (15), Neeraj (12), Sangeeta Malik (34), Poonam (34), Mamta Jha (40), Baby Kumari (24), Manoj (47)

While the entire country mourns the loss of innocent lives, questions are being raised about crowd management and railway safety. With the Kumbh Mela expected to draw even bigger crowds in the coming years, the pressure is on authorities to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
