Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express Train Derails Near UP’s Gonda

Thursday, afternoon train number 15904 Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express that left on Wednesday night from Chandigarh derailed near Gonda Junction Station between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations at around 2:37 pm on Thursday under the jurisdiction of North Eastern Railway.
Three passengers have died and over 34 are injured after several coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh express train derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda. The incident occurred in Pikaura, between Gonda and Jhilahi in Uttar Pradesh. Taking cognizance of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the local administration to provide all possible help to the affected passengers. He asked the officials to ensure that the injured get proper medical care.
A rescue team has been sent to the site for relief operations. Visuals show passengers standing on the sides of the track with their luggage. The loco pilot of the train claimed that he heard a loud explosion just before the collision. The Central Government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident.
A 40-member medical team with 15 ambulances were at the spot and more ambulances were on their way to the accident site.
Out of the 21 coaches, five coaches of the AC compartment derailed a few kilometers before the Jhulahi railway station. Several trains have been impacted on the route and a few have been diverted, Pankaj Singh, CPRO, North Eastern Railways said.
An eyewitness said after the accident track was uprooted for about 500 meters. Electric lines were also damaged. The initial reason for the accident is said to be the settling of the track due to the rain.
The accident site is about 150 kilometers from the capital Lucknow. Immediately after the accident, nearby villagers broke the glass of the overturned AC coach and pulled out the passengers trapped inside. Within some time, SDRF, police, and RPF personnel also took charge.
6 AC bogies were attached after the engine of the 24-bogie train, out of which two bogies derailed and fell, after which four other AC bogies also dangled from the track. Due to the speed of the vehicle being more than 100 km/ hour, sudden breaking was the main reason. It is being told that after this, about eight other branches of the train also derailed.
The Railway Ministry has announced an assistance amount of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those killed in the accident, Rs 2.5 lakh each to the seriously injured, and Rs 50 thousand to the minor injured passengers.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has briefed about the accident, and authorities are monitoring the situation.
