The International Cricket Council (ICC) has added a twist to the ongoing World Cup 2023 by declaring that the league-stage positions will determine the eight teams participating in the Champions Trophy 2025. The top three – India, South Africa, and Australia, along with hosts Pakistan and sixth-placed Afghanistan, have secured spots. However, the remaining two slots are still up for grabs, intensifying the competition among England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Netherlands.

England, after a crucial win against Netherlands, sits at the seventh spot but must defeat Pakistan in their final league game. Yet, a victory alone won’t secure their qualification. England needs both Bangladesh and Netherlands to lose their matches, and the margin of their win should not surpass England’s net run rate (NRR).

Bangladesh faces a tougher challenge, needing a significant win against five-time champions Australia to stay in contention. A loss requires them to ensure the margin doesn’t drop them below Sri Lanka on the points table while expecting Netherlands to lose.

Sri Lanka, having completed their league games, relies on fate. They need two of the three – England, Bangladesh, and Netherlands – to lose by significant margins for qualification.

Netherlands, at the bottom with a poor NRR, faces the daunting task of beating India with a substantial margin. Even with a win, they depend on one of Bangladesh or England suffering a significant loss to secure qualification via NRR.

As the World Cup drama unfolds, these teams are battling not only for victory on the field but also for a coveted spot in the Champions Trophy 2025.
