Farmers in Punjab are preparing for a one-day protest on Saturday, October 26, against the state government, demanding solutions to issues like the timely procurement of paddy, PTI reported. As part of the demonstration, farmers plan to block roads across multiple locations in Punjab. “We will start the road blockade at four key points at 1 p.m. on October 26,” announced Surjeet Singh Phul, Chairman of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) Punjab. The “chakka jam” will be organized at one location each in the districts of Sangrur and Moga, as well as in Phagwara and Batala, and it may continue indefinitely if necessary, he told ANI.

According to Singh, the main reason for the protest is the sluggish pace of paddy procurement. Officials report that only 10% of the 11.10 lakh tonnes of paddy brought to Punjab’s markets in the first 15 days of the procurement season, which began on October 1, has been collected by procurement agencies. In response, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has called on the central government for support. A recent meeting in Delhi, chaired by Union Food Minister Prahlad Joshi, Minister of State for Food Ravneet Singh Bittu, and CM Mann, addressed these procurement delays.

In addition to paddy procurement issues, today’s protest addresses penalties imposed for stubble burning. Criticizing the government on this issue, BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait demanded guidance on stubble management, stating that farmers face penalties or bans on crop sales if stubble is burned. On October 21, farmers appealed to the government for a permanent solution for stubble burning, saying they resort to burning out of necessity. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu criticized the AAP government, accusing it of neglecting farmers and responding with FIRs against them.
