On Thursday, the Supreme Court began hearing the Delhi Chief Minister’s bail plea, challenging his arrest by the CBI in the excise policy case.

The Supreme Court began hearing key pleas from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday, seeking bail in the now-defunct excise policy case, following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Earlier, the Delhi High Court extended his judicial custody until September 11. Kejriwal is challenging the Delhi High Court’s decision to uphold his arrest by the CBI.

CBI’s Allegations:

  • The CBI filed its fourth supplementary chargesheet on July 30, naming Kejriwal, Satyendar Jain, Amit Arora, Vinod Chauhan, Ashish Mathur, and P. Sarath Reddy as accused in the case.
  • The chargesheet claims Kejriwal is a primary conspirator with links to the “South group,” which includes K. Kavitha, Raghav Magunta, Arun Pillai, Butchibabu Gorantla, P. Sarath Reddy, Abhishek Boinpally, and Benoy Babu.
  • The 55-year-old AAP leader was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, shortly after the Delhi High Court denied him interim protection from arrest. This arrest caused significant political turmoil in Delhi and escalated tensions between the AAP and the Union government.
  • Kejriwal was then taken into CBI custody on June 26 at the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi and placed in judicial custody on June 29.
  • While the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in the ED case on July 12, Kejriwal remains in Tihar Jail due to his CBI arrest.
