CBI Detains Former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh for Questioning in Connection with Doctor’s Murder

The situation is worsening for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained him for questioning on Friday afternoon. Ghosh had resigned from his position at RG Kar on August 12 amid allegations of a criminal racket operating within the hospital, where a 31-year-old doctor was found raped and murdered.
The CBI detained Ghosh after the Calcutta High Court advised him to cooperate with the investigation. He was questioned at the CBI’s CGO Complex office in Salt Lake for over eight hours. The CBI also questioned his former colleagues, including Arunava Dutta Chowdhury, head of the chest department, and Dr. Sanjay Vashisth, the former superintendent of RG Kar. To date, the agency has interviewed around 30 individuals, including doctors, postgraduate students, heads of departments, and staff members. On Friday night, security guards, ward boys, and nurses were also summoned for questioning.
Speaking to the media before his questioning on Saturday, Ghosh denied reports of his arrest and claimed he did not know the accused, Sanjay Roy. He also stated that there had been no confrontation. According to sources from CNN-News18, the CBI is interrogating the hospital’s management and staff to reconstruct the events leading up to the doctor’s brutal murder. When asked if allegations of illicit activities at RG Kar were being investigated, a CBI officer stated, “We are looking at all aspects of the case.”
The deceased doctor’s family members informed the CBI that she had been under significant pressure at RG Kar. The CBI now seeks to determine whether Ghosh was aware of the reasons behind her distress and if any complaints regarding this pressure had been made to the college authorities.
