Canada to Investigate India’s Intervention in the Country’s General Elections
Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada escalated further as Canada announced an inquiry into India’s alleged interference in the General Elections of Canada in 2019 and 2021. The matter first made headlines when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused China’s government of interfering in the country’s election by endorsing candidates supportive of China. The statement from the commissioner has also raised an investigation probe regarding the involvement of countries like Russia, China, and various states in interference in the Canadian elections. India and Iran have also been named as the countries to be subjected to the subsequent inquiry.
The inquiry would further worsen ties between India and Canada, as relations between the two countries heated up when Trudeau held India responsible for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh activist considered a terrorist in India due to his demand for a separate Sikh nation called Khalistan. Trudeau expelled India’s top diplomat while India also ordered a Canadian Diplomat to leave the country at the same time as a tit-for-tat strategy. Canada also put an end to the ongoing talks regarding a Free Trade Agreement during the G20 Conference held in India.
The souring ties also affected the status of Indian students studying in Canada, with the most prominent setback occurring when the Indian embassy in Canada temporarily halted visa services due to “operational issues,” creating uncertainty and delays for students seeking visas or renewals.
As diplomatic situations continue to evolve, it is still unclear about the future of relations between the two countries. If tensions persist and trust remains low, collaboration might be limited to specific areas where interests align. This would hinder their regional and global influence in the upcoming years.
