In a recent development, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada is actively engaged in talks with India to address the Indian government’s demand that 41 out of the 62 Canadian diplomats currently stationed in India must leave the country within a week.

Previously, India had informed Canada that it must remove the diplomats by the 10th of October, according to the Financial Times. Neither Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada nor Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged the report.

Melanie Joly informed reporters, “We are in contact with the government of India. We take Canadian diplomats’ safety very seriously, and we will continue to engage privately because we believe diplomatic conversations are best kept private.”

Diplomatic ties between Canada and India have become strained due to Canada’s skepticism that Indian government agents were connected to the murder of a Sikh leader and Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in June, whom India had labeled a “terrorist.”

India, on the other hand, refuted the accusation as absurd.

The Financial Times reported that India had threatened to revoke the diplomatic immunity of the 41 diplomats told to leave if they stayed in the country past October 10. There are 62 Canadian diplomats in India.

On the 22nd of September, India made another significant decision to suspend new visas for Canadians and urged Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in India.

Trudeau rejected retaliation and stated that Ottawa was not considering amplifying the situation at hand.

In Ottawa, the Indian High Commission refused to make a statement.

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Indian Foreign Minister, talked about an earlier “climate of violence” and an “atmosphere of intimidation” against Indian diplomats residing in Canada, where the occupation of Sikh Separatist leaders had irked New Delhi.
