The friendship and relations between India and Canada are long-standing and are based on historical ties, economic cooperation, and shared democratic values. Both countries are among the largest and most successful democracies and are based on shared democratic values. The relationship between the two countries dates back to the 20th century.

In recent times, there has been sourness in the relations between the two countries. This relationship began in the 20th century when Indian immigrants began arriving in Canada, primarily to the western provinces. The immigrants faced many challenges there and found new ways for Indians. After which a large number of people from India, especially from the Punjab region, started settling there. Indian people started mixing with the people of Canada. And Indian culture started mixing with Canadian culture.

After India’s independence in 1947, Canada was one of the first countries to recognize India’s independence. There have been many occasions when there has been a rift in this relationship, which has been resolved through diplomatic means. In the early days, a large ship of Indian immigrants was stopped from entering Canada. This is where the first differences began and a new beginning of friendship took place. Later Indians built Little India in Canada.

After India’s nuclear test in 1974, almost the whole world turned against us and Canada was also one of them. At that time, western countries could do anything to humiliate India and this was a good opportunity.

Canada imposed sanctions on India as well as those countries which had strict non-proliferation policies, Canada suspended nuclear cooperation with India till 2010 and the growth rate of a country decreases due to sanctions. But I think the most important thing here is supporting the Sikh separatist movement. Canada always supports the Khalistani group, which is considered a terrorist extremist group in India. This is the crucial point where the opinions of the two countries differ and India has lost a lot.

Canada is acting as the main headquarters for the Khalistani group, they live there and operate many operations and provide funding for such kinds of operations in India. In the 1980s planes were hijacked and many people lost their lives. These were planned by Khalistanis and when India blamed Canada they ignored it, even they backed terrorists. This issue again came into the limelight when on 18 June 2023, Canadian citizen and Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was murdered by some unknown persons in Canada itself.

The Canadian government called it a conspiracy of the Indian Intelligence Department and RAW and blamed India, but India rejected it outright and refused to do so.

Since then, tensions have been observed in diplomatic relations between Canada and India and discussions on many issues have stopped, but yesterday in the G-7, many important issues were discussed between Modi and Canadian PM Trudeau and PM Modi himself shared this information on his Twitter account with pictures of both. It is being speculated that relations between the two countries will improve and there will be talks on issues of privacy as well. It is also being hoped that Canada and India will work by making rules against terrorist groups while paying attention to the problems.

Anyway, there are separate issues related to the environment of both the countries which will be solved only by sitting together. Now it is expected that Modi’s third term will be successful in solving all the problems.
