12th February 2024 – EFLU Campus: The tranquil grounds of EFLU, Hyderabad, were marred by chaos and violence as a series of events unfolded, igniting tensions between student groups and raising concerns over the sanctity of democratic processes.

It began as an attempt to hold a University General Body Meeting (UGBM) to elect the election commission for the upcoming Student Council elections and turned into a battleground of ideologies. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student wing with a vocal presence, openly disrupted the proceedings, demanding the cancellation of the meeting, thus undermining the very essence of democratic practices, which led to the cancellation of the whole election to the constitution of the election commission.

The ABVP’s confrontational stance was met with condemnation from various student groups, notably the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), who rallied against what they termed “hooliganism” and “goondaraj.” The disruption not only led to the abandonment of the UGBM but also escalated into physical quarrels, with reports of attacks on the faculty, especially important dignitaries in the meeting, including the University Proctor, Dean of Students Welfare, and other faculty members and students who stood in opposition to ABVP’s actions.

In a display of resilience, students organised a peaceful human chain protest, seeking to reclaim their rights and voice their dissent against ABVP’s tactics. However, the event took a violent turn as ABVP members allegedly assaulted two students, further exacerbating tensions on campus.

The aftermath of these incidents revealed a disturbing trend of polarisation and intimidation tactics employed by ABVP, as well as allegations of administrative complacency and negligence. Reports of ABVP propagating false narratives to deflect blame only added to the confusion and mistrust among the student body.

While calls for accountability and justice spread across the campus, the overarching concern remains the erosion of democratic values and the need for a concerted effort to uphold the integrity of electoral processes. The role of the university administration in ensuring the safety and well-being of students, as well as in upholding impartiality and justice, comes under scrutiny amidst these turbulent times.

As the campus struggles with the fallout of these events, the need for dialogue, tolerance, and respect for differing viewpoints becomes more imperative than ever. The echoes of dissent and the clamour for justice serve as a stark reminder of the enduring struggle to preserve the ideals of democracy and inclusivity within educational institutions.
