In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court Division Bench has mandated a collaborative investigation into the recent attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The court, on Tuesday, directed the State Election Commission to ensure an equal deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and state armed forces at polling booths. The directive specifies that CAPF personnel should remain stationed until the completion of the entire election process.
During the court proceedings, the deputy solicitor general proposed a solution, suggesting a deployment ratio of 50:50 with approximately 65,000 active central police personnel and 70,000 state police personnel. The division bench, led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, further instructed the Inspector General of the Border Security Force (BSF), the force coordinator appointed by the central government, to issue necessary orders for widespread deployment throughout the state.
The court’s decision comes in response to concerns raised by petitioners representing a segment of state government employees assigned to poll duty. They emphasized the crucial issue of safety and security for polling personnel across all stations. The petitioners expressed apprehension, noting that the current deployment of central armed police forces might not adequately cover all polling stations in the state.
Previously, on June 21, the Calcutta High Court had directed the deployment of Central forces, ensuring it is no less than the forces deployed during the 2013 panchayat polls in the state. The upcoming panchayat polls in West Bengal are scheduled for July 8, covering all 234 districts in a single-phase election.
