Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court today expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation into the Garden Reach building collapse and took a stern stance against the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. It urged the state government and the KMC to take decisive action against the real culprits, hinting at alleged officials who ignored safety concerns related to the collapse of an unauthorised structure at Garden Reach, resulting in 11 fatalities.

The court emphasized that these officials were the true perpetrators and must be held accountable. During the hearing, the court sarcastically remarked on the arrests of two individuals, questioning whether those who neglected safety issues and participated in the conspiracy had been appropriately dealt with. It admonished the civic administration, stating that officials must be investigated for breaching discipline.

Meanwhile, Mayor Firhad Hakim reaffirmed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal construction during a meeting with engineers, urging them not to succumb to pressure from influential figures obstructing their work. Responding to inquiries about the court’s remarks, the mayor assured compliance with its orders and announced the formation of a committee to investigate various aspects of the collapse, including the cause, soil conditions, building materials, engineering lapses, and the negligence of engineers.

The mayor highlighted the challenge posed by external interference in cases of illegal construction and announced the appointment of two hearing officers to address the issue.
