On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the recommendation of a high-level committee to implement simultaneous national, state, and local elections across India. This move, part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 2024 election manifesto and backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to introduce significant reforms that could reshape the country’s democratic landscape.

However, the proposal has been met with strong opposition from various political parties and activists, who argue it could undermine democratic accountability. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Cabinet has accepted the committee’s recommendations.

The committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu on March 14, outlining a phased approach. Vaishnaw added that an implementation group would be formed to carry out the recommendations and that the government would work to build consensus over the coming months, emphasizing that the move aims to strengthen democracy.

For the proposal to become law, a constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds majority in Parliament and ratification by the state assemblies is necessary. There is uncertainty about whether the government, which holds a reduced majority, can gather enough support.

The Kovind panel’s 18,000-page report suggests synchronizing Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly elections first, with local body elections to follow within 100 days. Prime Minister Modi has consistently advocated for simultaneous polls, citing reduced costs and fewer restrictions on policymaking.

BJP leaders highlighted that the Cabinet’s approval signals independent decision-making, unaffected by pressure from allies or the coalition of 14 parties in the National Democratic Alliance. Modi called the step crucial for making India’s democracy more vibrant and participatory.
