On February 10, 2024, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister of India, stated that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, expected to be held in May 2024. He made this announcement while speaking at an event in Delhi. He reiterated that the purpose of the CAA is to grant citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minorities from specific neighboring countries, not to take away anyone’s citizenship.

He further claimed that fears about the CAA taking away citizenship are based on misinformation and urged people not to be misled. He referenced the Indian government’s historical commitment to welcoming refugees and cited the promises made at the time of partition.

What is the Citizenship Amendment Act?

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed by the Narendra Modi government in December 2019, seeks to offer Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who have been persecuted and arrived in India before December 31, 2014. This includes Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians.

Significant protests broke out nationwide when the CAA was approved. Protesters criticized the act as a mechanism against the secular principles of India and called it ‘discriminatory.’ Nationwide demonstrations against this act took many lives and gained global attention.
