Billionaire Gautam Adani, already under intense investigation, has suffered a double legal blow as the United States has launched a bribery probe against him while the Indian government is set to file an SEC suit against him. This created a stir in the business world, putting Adani’s vast empire at risk.

According to reports, US prosecutors have accused Adani Group executives of being involved in a $265 million bribery scheme to secure high-value solar power contracts in India. The deal allegedly involved payments to Indian officials to secure lucrative deals at higher prices, mislead investors and distort competition. The case falls under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which prohibits US-connected companies from engaging in foreign corruption.

In a separate legal battle, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed a lawsuit against Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani, alleging financial misconduct. The Ministry of Law and Justice has directed an Ahmedabad court to issue legal summons to Adani, bringing the SEC case under Indian jurisdiction. The suit states that the Adani Group has misled investors and regulators about its business dealings, particularly in the renewable energy sector.

This has raised serious concerns about corporate governance at the Adani Group, causing a stir in the market. Fitch Ratings recently gave Adani Energy Solutions Ltd a negative outlook, citing risks posed by the US investigation. Experts believe these legal troubles could impact the Adani group’s global expansion plans, especially in renewable energy and infrastructure.

With pressure mounting from international regulators and legal authorities, Gautam Adani’s response to these allegations will be crucial in determining the future of his business. If proven, the allegations could lead to severe financial penalties, legal consequences and reputational damage for one of India’s most influential business figures.
