In the aftermath of England’s surprising victory over India in the opening match of the five-test series, former cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has launched a scathing attack on Indian captain Rohit Sharma, asserting that the veteran opener is now ‘past his best’ in the longest format of the game. Despite India starting as favorites, they suffered a 28-run defeat at the hands of Ben Stokes’ men at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Boycott’s criticism comes as Rohit Sharma’s performance in the first Test has come under scrutiny, with the former England cricketer questioning Rohit’s ability to lead the team effectively.
Boycott highlighted Rohit Sharma’s batting statistics, pointing out that the Indian captain has managed to score only two centuries at home for the Asian giants in the last four years. Expressing his views in a column for The Telegraph, Boycott stated, “Their captain Rohit Sharma is nearly 37 and past his best. He makes pretty cameos but has only scored two Test hundreds at home in four years.” The former cricketer went on to criticize India’s overall performance, claiming that the team is currently weak in the field and ripe for the taking.
Despite India posting a formidable total of 436 in their first innings, Rohit Sharma failed to capitalize on his start, scoring 39 off 58 balls in the second innings. Boycott suggested that India’s vulnerability is further exacerbated by the absence of key players such as Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. With Jadeja nursing a hamstring injury and Kohli not available for the series opener, Boycott believes that England has a golden opportunity to register a historic series win over the hosts in their own backyard.
Boycott’s column also raised concerns about India’s upcoming challenges, citing the unavailability of standout performers Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul in the second Test. Both players played crucial roles in the series opener, but due to injuries, they will be absent from the second game against England. Boycott believes that the signs are favorable for England, given India’s current predicament, and emphasized that the time is ripe for the visitors to capitalize on this rare opportunity.
As India faces a selection headache and strives to bounce back in the series, Geoffrey Boycott’s critical assessment of Rohit Sharma and the vulnerabilities in the Indian team adds an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming encounters. The series now hangs in the balance, with England looking to exploit the perceived weaknesses in the Indian squad and secure a historic series win on Indian soil.
