Supreme Court judge Justice Dipankar Datta has highlighted the shortage of judges in the Bombay High Court. He urged judges to maintain a proper work-life balance without compromising on their health. He was speaking at an event in Mumbai where Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai was felicitated.

Shortage of Judges:

  • Current Strength: The Bombay High Court has 68–70 judges, which is short of the sanctioned strength of 94 judges.
  • Historical Context: Despite an increase in the number of judges from 75 to 94 in 2013. The court has never touched the sanctioned strength.

Work-Life Balance:

  • Importance: Justice Datta emphasised the importance of maintaining a proper work-life balance. And not compromising one’s health for the sake of work.
  • Consequences: He warned that neglecting one’s health can have serious consequences. Not just for the individual but also for their family and dependents.

Other Issues:

  • Electricity Allowance: Justice Datta requested an increase in the electricity allowance for judges, citing the increased use of air conditioners, microwave ovens, and other appliances.
  • Fuel Allowance: He also proposed an increase in the fuel allowance for judges. He suggested that it be changed to 2,400 litres per year instead of 200 litres per month.

Justice Datta urged Chief Justice Gavai to reconsider these proposals that the authorities had previously turned down.
