The world of Bollywood is known for its glitz and glamour, but you know what they say: “All that glitters is not gold.” There is a shift in the mindset, but there is a lot to be done. The recent revelation that comes from Alia Bhatt about her husband instructing her to wipe off her lipstick goes on to say a lot about the deeply entrenched hypocrisies.

Marriage, often celebrated as a sacred union, has ironically marked the end of numerous careers in Bollywood. Behind the glitz and glamor, a breeding ground for narrow-mindedness lurks. The industry is heavily influenced by certain families; it’s almost like they have a monopoly over the industry.

This makes it hard for new talents to come and make their mark, although now over-the-top (OTT) platforms prove to be an efficient platform to launch new and seasoned artists who have a hard time making their way to the silver screen due to the obstacles that the industry presents to someone who they think doesn’t belong to their lobby.

This practice of lobbying isn’t new in the industry; it’s just more prominent now due to the narrative that social media sets. The more glamorous and control one has over their social media image, the more they can control their chances of being successful in the industry. Bollywood receives a lot of backlash due to its stance towards nepotism; it takes a very centrist stand.

Bollywood has a lot of potential for growth if it can do away with the deep-rooted hypocrisies. Talent and creativity should take center stage, but somehow your family and wealth matter more. Creating cinema is a work of art, but the hypocrisy that surrounds it is commercializing it to an extent that it’s losing its essence, i.e., of being authentic, and it’s becoming more mechanized in its ways.
