Bolivia Breaks Diplomatic Ties with Israel Over Gaza Conflict

Bolivia announced on Tuesday that it had severed diplomatic relations with Israel in response to the Israeli military’s attacks on the Gaza Strip. Neighboring countries Colombia and Chile also recalled their ambassadors from Israel for consultations. These South American nations strongly criticized Israel’s actions and expressed condemnation for the loss of Palestinian lives.
Bolivia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Freddy Mamani, stated that the decision to break diplomatic ties with Israel was a clear repudiation of what they deemed an aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive in Gaza. The three countries collectively called for an immediate ceasefire, with Bolivia and Chile advocating for the passage of humanitarian aid into the region while accusing Israel of violating international law.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro characterized the attacks as a “massacre of the Palestinian people.” Other Latin American countries, including Mexico and Brazil, have also called for a ceasefire and expressed concern over the situation.
This marks the second time Bolivia has severed diplomatic ties with Israel over the Gaza conflict. In 2009, under leftist President Evo Morales, Bolivia took a similar step in protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza. In 2020, diplomatic relations were reestablished under the government of right-wing interim President Jeanine Anez.
Health authorities in Gaza report a significant number of casualties, with thousands of people killed, including many children, and a large portion of the civilian population displaced. The Israeli military has accused Hamas, which controls Gaza and is backed by Iran, of using civilian buildings for military purposes, a claim that Hamas denies.
