Blinken Set to Travel to Egypt, Israel for Gaza Ceasefire
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to commence his eighth visit to Israel and Egypt this week.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit Cairo, Egypt this week and then later to Israel. His main objective is to create pressure on Israel and Hamas so that both of them can have a ceasefire in Gaza and to ensure that the war doesn’t spill over to neighboring Lebanon.
It is his 8th visit to the region since October 7 attacks were carried out by Hamas militants on Oct 7, triggering the deadliest war in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The US diplomat is also set to visit Jordan and Qatar this week.
According to the State Department schedule, Blinken will first visit Cairo and will meet the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi before traveling to Israel. Later on Monday, he is set to meet Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
His visit also comes after May 31, when US President Joe Biden released his peace plan regarding the war, which consisted of a ceasefire, prisoner-hostage swap deal, and the reconstruction of the war-torn exclave of Gaza.
