Iran and Hezbollah may attack Israel in the next 24 to 48 hours, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned.

On Monday, amid growing concerns about a regional war in the Middle East, the unproven information was published by the US publication Axios. Following the assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas officials last week, Iran has vowed to exact revenge.

In the meantime, the Israeli military reported that Hezbollah was behind an early Monday drone strike on northern Israel that left two Israeli troops injured and ignited a fire.

This week’s killings of top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Lebanon and influential Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran sparked fears of a full-scale regional conflict.

According to Axios, Blinken warned his G7 colleagues on a conference call that Iran and Hezbollah might strike Israel on Monday.

Axios said that Blinken emphasized that Washington “doesn’t know the exact timing of the attacks” or what form they will take, but that Washington expects Iran and Hezbollah will both retaliate.

Blinken emphasized to his G7 colleagues that the US wants to stop the escalation by convincing Hezbollah and Iran to scale back their assaults and temper any Israeli retaliation.

He put diplomatic pressure on the three foreign ministers, asking them to join that push.

With the insistence that “no country or nation stands to gain from a further escalation,” the G7—which also consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

They issued a statement on Monday expressing their “deep concern over the heightened level of tension in the Middle East” and urging moderation on all sides.

Yoav Gallant, the Israeli minister of defence, threatened to punish them severely if they dared to attack us.

Although it’s generally accepted that neither side is prepared for a full-scale conflict, there’s a significant chance of one given the current state of affairs.
