Blaze Erupts at Sabarmati Bullet Train Station Construction Site in Ahmedabad, Gujarat

A fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the under-construction Sabarmati bullet train station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, an official informed the news agency PTI. The blaze, which started around 6:30 a.m., prompted the deployment of thirteen fire tenders, and the situation was brought under control shortly thereafter.
According to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the organisation overseeing the project, the fire originated in the roof shuttering of a section of the construction site. Preliminary investigations suggest that sparks from welding work on temporary shuttering might have ignited the fire. “No injuries or casualties have been reported. While the exact cause is still under investigation, initial findings point to welding sparks from temporary shuttering work as a potential trigger,” the statement noted.
NHSRCL officials are actively monitoring the site to assess the situation. Sabarmati houses India’s first bullet train terminal, known for its advanced design and modern architecture. The project is being developed with financial and technical support from the Japanese government. In December 2023, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video showcasing the terminal’s contemporary architectural features on X.
The Sabarmati station is a key part of the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, which spans 352 km in Gujarat and 156 km in Maharashtra. The project includes 12 stations across Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadiad, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
