New Delhi: A fire at the official residence of a Delhi High Court judge led to the shocking discovery of a large stash of cash, sparking uproar within judicial circles. The incident prompted the Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, to swiftly order the judge’s transfer to another High Court.
The blaze erupted at the bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma while he was out of town. His family alerted the fire department and police. Once the fire was extinguished, officials stumbled upon a massive amount of cash in one of the rooms. Records of the seizure were officially documented, as the money appeared to be unaccounted for.
Local police informed senior officers, escalating the matter to government authorities, who eventually briefed the CJI. Disturbed by the revelations, CJI Khanna immediately convened a collegium meeting. The decision to transfer Justice Varma to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court, was unanimous. He had been serving at the Delhi HC since October 2021.
However, some collegium members argued that a mere transfer was insufficient for such a serious matter, warning that it could damage the judiciary’s credibility. They recommended that Justice Varma be asked to resign and, if he refused, an in-house inquiry should be initiated—potentially leading to impeachment proceedings in Parliament.
As per the Supreme Court’s in-house procedure established in 1999 for handling allegations of misconduct or corruption against judges, the CJI can seek the judge’s response to the accusations. If the CJI is unsatisfied, they may form a probe panel consisting of one SC judge and two High Court Chief Justices to investigate the matter further.
