Blast at Firecracker Unit in UP Leaves 3 Dead, 6 Injured

Meerut: A massive blast at a firecracker factory near Deoband in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district on Saturday claimed the lives of three workers and left at least six others critically injured. According to police, three individuals — Mohd Nafees (50) and his sons Nadeem and Kasif (both in their early 20s) — have been arrested for “manufacturing firecrackers beyond the permitted limits.”
Saharanpur SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan stated, “The explosion occurred around 6 a.m. Although the factory owner had a valid licence, it was being misused to produce a much larger quantity of firecrackers than allowed. The victims have been identified as Rahul Kumar (22), Vishal Kumar (23), and Vikas Singh (22), who were inside the unit at the time of the incident. Rescue teams and forensic experts quickly reached the site to gather evidence. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”
An FIR has been filed against the accused under various sections of the BNS — 288 (negligent handling of explosive substances), 105 (culpable homicide), and 238 (destruction of evidence) — along with relevant sections of the Explosives Act at the Deoband police station.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes, with body parts scattered around, some as far as 200 meters from the blast site. Locals reported that the sound of continuous firecracker explosions could be heard from a great distance and mentioned that the factory had stored “a large amount of inflammable materials,” which helped the fire spread quickly.
Ankit Kashyap, a local resident, remarked, “There were major lapses in safety checks. The explosion was so intense that its sound could be heard two kilometers away. Thankfully, it occurred early in the morning, or the death toll could have been much higher.”
