Delhi: LG VK Saxena reportedly told outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Atishi that AAP’s defeat in the assembly elections was due to a “curse from Yamuna Maiya” during her visit to Raj Bhawan to submit her resignation, ANI reported, citing sources. Saxena is said to have reminded Atishi that he had repeatedly warned the Kejriwal-led government about public interest issues, particularly the deteriorating condition of the Yamuna River, which he claimed the administration consistently ignored.
The cleanliness of the Yamuna was a major campaign issue in the lead-up to the elections. AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal accused the Haryana government of polluting the river, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his campaign, vowed that the BJP would make “Yamuna ji the identity of Delhi.”
The BJP secured a landslide victory, winning 48 out of 70 seats and ending AAP’s rule after 27 years. AAP’s tally plummeted from 62 seats to just 22. Despite the party’s overall poor performance, Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat after a close contest, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes. Her victory was one of the few bright spots for AAP, as senior leaders such as former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia lost their constituencies.
Following the election results, LG Saxena dissolved the seventh legislative assembly of Delhi, paving the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government in the national capital.
