Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strategically chosen Mohan Yadav as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, leaving both the opposition and their own party members taken aback.

Mohan Yadav, currently representing the Ujjain Dakshin constituency in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, secured a resounding victory in the 2023 elections with a margin of over 13,000 votes. Having previously served as a cabinet minister in Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s government, Yadav boasts a political career marked by consistent success, having clinched the same seat in the 2013 and 2018 assembly elections.

Born on March 25, 1965, in Ujjain, Mohan Yadav enjoys a clean image and the backing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Actively engaged in the state’s wrestling association, Yadav’s multifaceted personality extends to his academic achievements, including degrees in BSc, LLB, MA, PhD, among others.

The newly appointed Chief Minister is married to Seema Yadav, and together they have two sons and a daughter. He served as the higher education minister in the previous Shivraj Singh Chouhan government.

Mohan Yadav’s elevation is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to target the Other Backward Class (OBC) community, which constitutes more than half of the electorate in Madhya Pradesh. This calculated decision aligns with the party’s larger vision, aiming to secure OBC votes not only in the state but also in crucial regions like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, as highlighted by political experts.

The BJP’s leadership, eyeing the upcoming general elections, seems to have played a masterstroke by nominating Yadav for the chief ministerial role, signaling a focused approach towards consolidating support from diverse voter demographics. In addition to Yadav’s appointment, the BJP has elected outgoing finance minister Jagdish Devda and public relations minister Rajendra Shukla as deputy chief ministers, further solidifying their strategic lineup.

Deputy Chief Ministers

Outgoing finance minister and two-time MLA Jagdish Devda from Mandsaur and outgoing public relations minister MLA Rajendra Shukla from Rewa have been elected as deputy chief ministers.

Ex-union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar has been elected as the speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.
