Akshay Shinde, the accused, was fatally shot by the police on Monday night after reportedly seizing a policeman’s gun and opening fire on them.

In response to the INDIA Bloc’s criticism of the police encounter that killed the Badlapur sexual assault accused, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday labeled the opposition as the “Balatkari Bachao Alliance” (Save Rapist Alliance). Akshay Shinde, the accused, was shot dead by the police on Monday night after allegedly snatching a policeman’s gun and firing at them. The opposition has called for an investigation into the encounter.

“Akshay Shinde, accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls in Badlapur, died in police retaliatory firing. While Maharashtra and Badlapur can breathe a sigh of relief, the INDI alliance parties are mourning the death of a rapist. Is this a ‘Balatkari Bachao Alliance?” said BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.

Targeting the Mamata Banerjee government, Poonawalla accused the INDI alliance of attempting to protect the accused in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. He also alleged they defended Moeed Khan, accused in the Ayodhya gangrape case. “Some leaders of the Congress party and INDI alliance have begun to speak in favor of rapists, which is utterly shameful,” he added.

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari echoed these sentiments, claiming that INDI alliance leaders, including Congress, supported rape-accused individuals. He specifically referenced incidents in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of downplaying the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case.

“When lawful action is taken in the Badlapur case, Congress leaders call it cold-blooded murder. They don’t stand with women but with their vote bank,” Bhandari said.

Shinde, 24, was accused of sexually assaulting two minors in Badlapur. He was shot near the Mumbra Bypass in Thane after allegedly taking a policeman’s gun while being transported in a police vehicle. Shinde’s family, however, rejected these claims, with his mother asserting that Akshay was even afraid of firecrackers. Opposition leaders have expressed doubts about the circumstances of his death.

Leader of the Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar questioned whether the encounter was an attempt to destroy evidence, calling for a judicial probe. Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole also demanded an investigation led by a sitting high court judge. Aaditya Thackeray, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating that while Shinde deserved the death penalty, the encounter was reckless and suspicious. He questioned why the school management involved in the case had not been apprehended and called for a neutral inquiry into the incident.
