The BJP has made a remarkable comeback in Haryana, surpassing the halfway mark, while Congress-NC is leading in Jammu and Kashmir.
In Haryana, the ruling BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Congress is determined to make a comeback after a decade out of power. This election, the first major clash between the two national parties since the Lok Sabha polls, could influence the political landscape ahead of assembly elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi. Voter turnout for Haryana’s 90-seat assembly stood at 67.90 percent. Although exit polls predict a Congress victory, the BJP remains confident in defying these forecasts.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has dismissed the exit poll results, asserting that the BJP will return with a full majority. “We will form the government on October 8, and once again the Congress will blame the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs),” Saini said. On the other hand, Congress leader and two-time former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is likely to be the party’s candidate for the top post, expressed optimism, stating, “A comfortable majority for Congress is within reach.”
The Haryana assembly elections primarily turned into a contest between the BJP and Congress, although regional parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) are also competing. Leaders from these regional groups, including JJP’s Dushyant Chautala and INLD’s Abhay Chautala, have claimed that their alliances could be key in case of a hung assembly. Meanwhile, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has insisted that no government can be formed without AAP’s support.
Several high-profile contests took place across the state, from Ladwa to Ambala and from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi to Adampur. Prominent figures like CM Saini, Opposition Leader Hooda, and JJP’s Dushyant Chautala are among the key candidates. The elections also saw intense rivalries within families, such as cousins Shruti Choudhry (BJP) and Anirudh Choudhary competing in Tosham and Devi Lal’s grandson Aditya Devi Lal (INLD) facing JJP’s Digvijay Singh Chautala in Dabwali.
