The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised Arvind Kejriwal on Monday, labelling the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader as “Advertisement Baba.” During a press conference, BJP MP Sambit Patra remarked, “From today, Arvind Kejriwal should be called ‘Advertisement Baba’… The Delhi government spent₹54 crore on the ‘Business Blasters’ scheme, but₹80 crore was spent on its advertisements. According to the CAG, the advertisement expenditure was 1.5 times the actual scheme cost. In another instance, ₹1.9 crore was allocated to a scheme, yet ₹27.9 crore was spent on advertisements,” Patra claimed, as quoted by ANI.

Patra also targeted Kejriwal regarding the renovation of his official residence. “As per the CAG report, on March 17, 2020, the Delhi PWD proposed remodelling Kejriwal’s residence by demolishing the existing structure and adding a floor. Astonishingly, this proposal was approved within a single day,” Patra said.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, authored by Girish Chandra Murmu, revealed that the total renovation cost for the Chief Minister’s residence, referred to as the ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ amounted to ₹33.66 crore. Initially, the remodelling was estimated at ₹7.61 crore, but the tender was issued for ₹8.62 crore—13.21% higher than the estimate. However, the project was completed in 2022 at ₹33.66 crore, a staggering 342.31% increase over the estimated cost.

“This massive scam was orchestrated for Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ and the CAG has raised serious concerns about the tendering process,” Patra added. The controversy, dubbed the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ scandal, revolves around allegations that Kejriwal spent exorbitant sums renovating his residence during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when numerous public development projects were put on hold.
