Minister Narendra Modi, tearing into the Congress for its veteran politician Sam Pitroda’s latest gaffe, said that the nation won’t tolerate disrespect based on skin color and expected a reaction from Congressman Rahul Gandhi.

While attempting to argue for national unity despite India’s diversity, Mr. Pitroda, whose comment on an inheritance tax in the US last month left the Congress red-faced in the election season, came up with a new howler. Mr. Pitroda characterised India as a diverse country.

He continued describing India’s diversity with people from the East looking like Chinese, people from the West looking like Arabs, people in the North possibly looking White, and people in the South appearing African in an exclusive interview with The Statesman.

The Congress recoiled at the statement made by its senior leader as if it were in a firefight. Mr. Sam Pitroda made regrettable and inappropriate comparisons, mostly to highlight India’s diversity on a podcast. Senior Congressman Jairam Ramesh stated in a post on X that the Indian National Congress fully distances itself from these comparisons, but it is also clear that this initiated a new jab from the BJP.

So during a rally in Warangal, Telangana, the Prime Minister unleashed a fierce attack on the Congress as footage of Mr. Pitroda’s remarks began making the rounds on social media. The leader of the government repeated his jab at Mr. Gandhi, calling him a “Shehzada.” He called Rahul out, saying, “Shehzade will have to answer. The nation will not stand for its citizens to be treated disrespectfully because of the color of their skin. Modi won’t put up with that, for sure.”

The Northeast Chief Ministers of the Bharatiya Janata Party – N Biren Singh of Manipur and Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam were among those who took exception to the comments. The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, also criticized Mr. Pitroda’s comments. She used the platform “X” and wrote about the event, also shaming the I.N.D.I alliance.
