Karnataka BJP leader R. Ashoka has cautioned against spreading misinformation about the revered Shri Manjunatha Swamy temple in Dharmasthala, amidst allegations of mass burials in the area. The BJP welcomed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the claims, but emphasized the need for an impartial investigation to uncover the truth.

Allegations and Investigation

A former sanitation worker alleged that he was forced to bury over 100 bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014. The SIT, led by senior IPS officer Pronab Mohanty, has been tasked with investigating these claims. Ashoka stressed that if any individuals are found guilty, they should face the law, but the temple should not be tarnished in the process.

BJP’s Stance

Ashoka stated, “If an individual has done something wrong, accusations should be directed at that person, not an entire religious institution.” He also questioned the sudden emergence of claims about mass burials after 20 years, suggesting that controversy was being generated to demean a religion. The BJP will continue to push for a thorough investigation, ensuring that the process does not harm the reputation of the temple or the Hindu community.

Temple Management’s Response

The Dharmasthala temple management has welcomed the SIT probe, emphasizing the need for truth and transparency. K. Parshwanath Jain, spokesperson of the temple administration, stated that the temple is committed to cooperating with the investigation to uncover the facts.

Court’s Intervention

In a related development, a Bengaluru court has restrained media houses and YouTube channels from publishing defamatory content against the temple and its officials. The court’s interim order directs the deletion of 8,842 distinct URLs spreading allegedly defamatory content.
