With the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana approaching, and parties launching their campaigns, the BJP is set to finalize its candidates for these two states during a Central Election Committee meeting in New Delhi on Sunday. Senior BJP leaders from both central and state levels will gather for a meeting chaired by national party president J P Nadda to discuss their candidate selections for the 90-member House in each state.

J&K will hold elections in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, while Haryana will vote in a single phase on October 1, with results announced on October 4. In Haryana, the BJP faces the challenge of overcoming anti-incumbency, especially after its seat count dropped to five in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Although the party fell short of a majority in the 2019 Assembly polls, it managed to form the government with the support of the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party. This time, however, the BJP is contesting the polls independently. In J&K, where the BJP previously held power as part of a coalition with the Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before withdrawing support in 2018, the party has gained momentum with the recent addition of former Apni Party vice-president Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali, an influential Gujjar leader. In the last Assembly elections in 2014, the BJP won 25 seats, just three less than the PDP. However, in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP contested only two seats in Jammu and won both.

The BJP’s CEC meeting comes a day after the PDP released its manifesto, with Mehbooba Mufti stating that the PDP “will extend complete electoral support to the National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance if it accepts the PDP’s pro-people agenda.” If the three opposition parties, all members of the INDIA bloc, unite for the Assembly polls, the BJP is likely to face a tough challenge. Meanwhile, in Haryana, the BJP is launching its Assembly poll campaign on Sunday. The party will simultaneously open election offices at around 20,000 booths across the state and start a Maha Jansampark Abhiyan. As part of this campaign, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, along with all ministers, MPs, MLAs, BJP state president Mohan Lal Badoli, Satish Poonia, and other leaders, will be present at the booths. The state unit has already submitted a list of prospective candidates ahead of the CEC meeting as it aims for a third consecutive term in Haryana.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jalgaon in Maharashtra to honor 11 lakh new ‘Lakhpati Didis’ who reached this milestone during his government’s third term. Modi is also expected to announce a revolving fund of Rs 2,500 crore, benefiting around 48 lakh members of 4.3 lakh self-help groups (SHGs). Additionally, a bank loan of Rs 5,000 crore will be issued, benefiting 2,35,400 SHGs with approximately 25.8 lakh members. Since the launch of the ‘Lakhpati Didis’ scheme, which aims to make women SHG members earn Rs 1 lakh annually, one crore women have already achieved this status. The government’s target is to create three crore ‘Lakhpati Didis.’ On Sunday, Modi will also visit Rajasthan, where he will be the chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur. He will also inaugurate the High Court museum.
