The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday responded sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the Narendra Modi government following allegations of bribery against industrialist Gautam Adani by U.S. authorities.
During a press conference, Rahul Gandhi demanded Adani’s arrest and pledged to raise the matter in Parliament. “As the Leader of the Opposition, it is my responsibility to address this issue. The Prime Minister is completely shielding Adani, who in turn supports the BJP. We will renew our demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe,” Gandhi stated.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra countered these allegations, asserting that “the law will take its own course” while accusing Gandhi and Congress of persistently attempting to tarnish Modi’s image since 2002. “Despite their efforts, they have failed. On the same day the opposition attacked the Prime Minister, he was honored with a prestigious international civilian award,” Patra remarked, as quoted by PTI.
Patra also highlighted the Adani Group’s significant investments in Congress-ruled states like Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, as well as DMK-led Tamil Nadu and Telangana under Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. “If Adani is corrupt, why are Congress governments seeking investments from his company?” he questioned.
The BJP leader further criticized Rahul Gandhi’s press conference, drawing parallels to his previous allegations over the Rafale deal and Covid-19 vaccines. Patra recalled that Gandhi had to later apologize to the Supreme Court for his claims. “Rahul Gandhi follows the same pattern — holding press conferences, repeating old accusations, and making baseless claims against the BJP and Prime Minister Modi,” Patra said.
Taking a dig at Gandhi, Patra suggested he take legal action instead of just holding press briefings. “Rahul Gandhi said Congress is doing the work of the judiciary. This is ironic, given that he and Sonia Gandhi are out on bail. Half of their party leadership is embroiled in legal troubles, yet they claim to act as arbiters of justice,” Patra added.
