Bishan Singh Bedi, the former captain of the Indian cricket team and a revered spin bowler, passed away at the age of 77 on October 23. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued an official statement expressing their condolences and sadness at Bedi’s demise, extending their thoughts and prayers to his family and fans during this difficult time. They wished for his soul to rest in peace.

Bedi, a legendary Indian spinner, made his mark by participating in 67 Test matches from 1967 to 1979, amassing an impressive tally of 266 wickets. At the time of his retirement, he held the distinction of being India’s leading wicket-taker in Test cricket.

In addition to his Test career, Bedi also played 10 One-Day International (ODI) matches, where he claimed seven wickets. Notably, he played a pivotal role in India’s first-ever ODI victory during the 1975 World Cup, delivering a remarkable performance with figures of 12-8-6-1 against East Africa.

Born in Amritsar, Bedi’s cricket journey commenced at an early age, ultimately leading him to represent Delhi in first-class cricket. He distinguished himself as one of the top wicket-takers in the first-class format, accumulating a total of 1,560 wickets in 370 matches.

Bedi’s leadership also brought glory to the Delhi team as they clinched the prestigious Ranji Trophy titles during the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons under his captaincy.

Several prominent figures paid their respects to Bedi, with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur expressing that the cricket world has suffered a significant loss. He acknowledged Bedi’s status as a former Indian team captain and a universally acclaimed bowler. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his deep sorrow over Bedi’s passing, emphasizing the cricketer’s indelible contributions to the cricketing world and his artistry on the pitch. Shah extended heartfelt condolences to Bedi’s family and his devoted fans during this time of mourning.
