Biggest weekend for Indian cinema: ‘Gadar 2’, ‘OMG 2’, ‘Jailer’ and ‘Bhola Shankar’ create box office history
The weekend of August 11 – 13 saw record collection of around Rs 390 crore for multiplexes and single screen halls, due to advent of highly anticipated films
Over the past weekend, Indian cinema experienced a remarkable surge in box office collections due to the much-anticipated releases of prominent films: ‘Gadar 2’, starring Sunny Deol, ‘OMG 2’, featuring Akshay Kumar, ‘Jailer’, starring Rajnikanth, and ‘Bhola Shankar’, with Chiranjeevi in the lead role. From August 11th to 13th, both multiplexes and single-screen cinema halls collectively amassed an impressive gross box office collection of over Rs 390 crore.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in the 100-year history of Indian cinema, as highlighted by a joint statement from the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and the Producers Guild of India (PGI). The statement underscores that this weekend saw an astounding attendance of over 2.10 crore moviegoers across the country, setting a record for the highest combined admissions in the past decade.
Notably, this weekend stands as the most bustling since the reopening of the cinema industry post the Covid-19 pandemic. PGI President Shibasish Sarkar expressed enthusiasm over the renewed vigor in the industry as audiences have shown unprecedented support, even filling early morning shows to capacity.
MAI, representing more than 11 cinema chains, encompassing over 500 multiplexes and 2,500 screens, is a significant presence in the Indian multiplex industry, accounting for about 75 percent of it. PGI, an esteemed association of film, television, and digital content producers, acknowledged the hardships endured by the cinema exhibition sector during the pandemic, as it had to halt operations for over a year due to safety precautions.
Trade expert Atul Mohan attributed the immense success of these four releases to their mass appeal, showcasing the discernible preferences of the Indian audience. Mohan asserted that this achievement holds immense significance, particularly in the post-Covid-19 era, reassuring audiences that cinema remains a steadfast part of their lives and that the Indian film industry continues to produce engaging and entertaining content.
Esteemed filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar attributed the remarkable response to the profound emotional connection people hold with films like ‘Gadar’, emphasizing that this surge in attendance exemplifies how a harmonious blend of content-driven cinema and entertainment can attract audiences back to theaters.
As of now, the box office collections stand at Rs 224 crore for ‘Gadar 2’, Rs 76 crore for ‘OMG 2’, Rs 350 crore for ‘Jailer’, and Rs 26 crore for ‘Bhola Shankar’, on a global scale.
