The 2024 U.S. elections are considering new perspectives, with the age and mental capacity of the candidates at the forefront.
A report on Saturday revealed that U.S. President Joe Biden suffers from memory lapses. The 2024 U.S. campaign trials focus on assessing the age and mental capacities of the candidates.
Former United States President Donald Trump accused Biden and Nikki Haley of lacking the mental capacity to run for president. Biden is the current Democrat President, while Haley is Trump’s rival as the last Republican candidate.
Haley responded that Trump lacks the mental capacity to run for president while Biden is too old to run for president. She will meet with Trump in South Carolina for the primary elections on February 24.
The Biden White House administration responded to the report submitted by the Department of Justice special counsel. While Biden suffers from poor memory, they continued to attack Trump and his mental acuity. Recently, Trump committed a few social blunders of mixing up names and other offenses.
T.J. Ducklo, a Biden spokesman, stated that Trump appears to be deranged, lying, or worse in public appearances. Biden and Trump, aged 81 and 77 respectively, are the oldest elected presidents in the United States. Thus, the issue of mental competency has come into play. Earlier, Biden had mixed up the names of a few world leaders.
In an Ipsos poll, 77% voted that Biden was too old for government administration, while 56% agreed the same regarding Trump. Haley, aged 52, called for a competency test for presidential candidates aged 75 and older.
This issue was again brought to the forefront when Special Counsel Robert Hur refused to draw charges against Biden. Hur was a U.S. attorney during the Trump administration and conducted a 15-month-long investigation into Biden and the mishandling of confidential documents.
Hur claims that he chose not to draw charges as the incumbent cooperated, and it would also be difficult to convict him. He describes Biden as a well-meaning elderly gentleman with a poor memory. Biden reportedly could not recall when his son Beau died when questioned by investigators.
Biden refuted Hur’s claims by stating that his memory was fine on Thursday at a White House appearance. Trump used the report to claim that Biden is fit to serve as the commander-in-chief.
Trump is close to gaining speed as the Republican candidate due to consecutive wins in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Haley has no plans to quit and is optimistic about the primary election in her home state of South Carolina. However, she is trailing far behind Trump in the opinion polls in the state.
Haley stated that it is time for a new generational leader to take the mantle as the president of the United States.
