A software engineer from Bengaluru took on the role of a detective to expose his wife’s undisclosed second marriage, ultimately winning a protracted four-year divorce case in a Mangaluru family court. As reported by The Times of India, the court not only approved his divorce petition but also dismissed his wife’s demand for permanent alimony and ordered her to pay ₹30,000 towards litigation expenses.
His suspicions were aroused after noticing irregular financial exchanges between his wife and her ex-boyfriend. Although she claimed the relationship had ended before their December 2018 wedding, he suspected otherwise. In a clever move, the husband posed as a potential employer during a fake Zoom job interview, during which his wife accidentally revealed that she had already ended her “first marriage” and was currently married to someone else.
This revelation led him to investigate further. Through RTI applications, he collected substantial evidence, including marriage certificates, PAN records, travel details, and a name-change affidavit — all confirming that she had remarried in March 2023 without legally ending their existing marriage.
The couple, both tech professionals, were originally married in Bantwal taluk, Dakshina Kannada, and lived in KR Puram, Bengaluru. In 2021, the husband filed for divorce under Section 13(1)(i-a) of the Hindu Marriage Act, citing mental cruelty, deception, and harassment.
In response, the wife accused him of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and forced abortion, demanding ₹3 crore in permanent alimony and ₹60,000 in monthly maintenance.
After assessing the evidence, the court granted the divorce on April 23, denied her financial claims, and instead ordered the husband to return her gold jewelry. It also granted him ₹30,000 as litigation costs — a rare outcome where the husband received financial compensation in a divorce dispute.
