A 56-year-old woman, identified as Rajni Gupta, died after undergoing bariatric surgery at Newtima Hospital in Meerut. Rajni was the sister of BJP leader Arvind Marwadi. The surgery was performed on July 11, 2025, with the aim of reducing her weight from 123 kg to 60 kg.

Cause of Death

According to reports, Rajni’s condition worsened after the surgery, and she experienced severe abdominal pain. An X-ray revealed that the stitches were not done properly, leading to a leak in her abdomen and a serious infection. The family alleges that the medical staff ignored her condition, which ultimately led to her death.

Family’s Allegations

The family has accused Dr. Rishi Singhal, who performed the surgery, of negligence and claimed that he had promised a weight loss of 30 kg within 24 hours. Rajni’s son, Shubham Gupta, stated that the doctor’s assurance was misleading, and his mother’s life was lost due to the surgery.

Investigation

The Meerut CMO has announced a probe into the incident and will form a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Rajni’s death. The police have also started an investigation, and the family has filed a complaint against Dr. Rishi Singhal and the hospital staff.

Hospital’s Response

Dr. Rishi Singhal has denied any negligence, stating that Rajni had multiple pre-existing conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid issues, and fatty liver. He claimed that the family was informed about the risks involved in the surgery.
