Bangladesh’s deadliest executioner, also known as “the hangman,” died at the age of 74. He hanged several serial killers, murderers, politicians, and individuals who planned coups in the country.
Shahjahan Bhuiya was admitted to a hospital in the country’s capital, Dhaka, on Monday after suddenly suffering from chest pain. He passed away while undergoing treatment.
Mr. Bhuiya executed nearly 26 people during his life, though other reports suggest he may have executed around 60.
Shahjahan Bhuiya was a former revolutionary who became a hangman after serving 42 years in prison on charges of murder and robbery. Due to his service as an executioner, his sentence was reduced by 10 years, and he was released from prison last June.
Among those hanged by him were military officers found guilty of killing the country’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh’s current prime minister. He also executed politicians Ali Ahsan Mujahid and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, who were both charged with war crimes, as well as the serial killer Ershad Shikder.
Shahjahan Bhuiya once stated, “If I didn’t hang them, someone else would have.” He wrote a book about his experiences as an executioner, including the procedure of hanging. The book, published earlier this year, gained significant attention and touched the hearts of people worldwide.
After his release from prison, he married a girl 50 years younger than him. Within a week, he took TikTok by storm by uploading short clips with the girl on social media. However, according to the Dhaka Tribune, he soon faced legal complications as a result of this marriage.
