As Durga Puja approaches, radical Islamic groups have issued warnings to Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, urging them not to openly celebrate the festival or engage in idol worship and immersions, according to a report by India Today.
Insaf Keemkari Chhatra-Janta, a radical Islamic group, led a protest in Dhaka’s Sector 13, opposing the Hindu community’s use of a long-standing playground for Durga Puja celebrations. Amid growing tensions between religious groups, several Islamic organizations have called for restrictions on the Hindu festival, the report added.
Protesters held placards in Bangla stating, “No worship anywhere by closing roads, no pollution to water by idol immersion, no worship to idols,” while presenting a 16-point demand list. Their concerns included environmental damage, the use of government funds for religious events, and disruptions caused by Durga Puja. They also criticized the festival’s national holiday status, despite Hindus making up only two percent of the population, claiming it was an inconvenience for the Muslim majority.
Furthermore, they called for the removal of temples built on “occupied” land and demanded that temples display anti-India banners and slogans to prove the loyalty of Hindu citizens to Bangladesh. Reports of vandalism and idol destruction have increased, heightening the Hindu community’s concerns.
In Khulna, Hindus told India Today they were being asked to pay 5 lakh Bangladeshi taka to celebrate Durga Puja. Despite assurances from Muhammad Yunus, the interim government’s chief advisor, attacks on the Hindu community’s life and property have surged following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina.
