The Bangladesh government called on India to advise its political leaders to refrain from making “objectionable and unacceptable” remarks.

The interim government of Bangladesh filed an official protest with India on Monday regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments, in which he referred to Bangladeshi nationals as “infiltrators,” according to India Today. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged the protest with India’s deputy high commissioner in Dhaka, describing Amit Shah’s remarks as “highly deplorable.”

The protest note expressed deep concern, stating that the government was “deeply hurt and extremely displeased.” It urged India to advise its political leaders to avoid making such “objectionable and unacceptable” statements, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. The protest note emphasized that remarks like these from high-ranking officials harm the spirit of mutual respect and understanding between two neighboring countries.

During an election campaign in Jharkhand last week, Amit Shah reportedly claimed that the BJP would “hang every Bangladeshi infiltrator upside down to teach them a lesson” if the party is elected to power. He also vowed to eliminate all infiltrators from the region under a BJP government, saying that infiltrators form the vote bank of parties like Lalu Yadav’s, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi. Shah further stated that the increasing number of infiltrators was displacing tribal populations and that only the BJP could address this issue.
