Australia voiced serious concerns after an Australian naval vessel, HMAS Toowoomba, encountered a Chinese warship in a volatile episode that led to injuries among Australian military divers. The incident, labelled “unsafe and unprofessional” by the Australian government, has escalated tensions between the two nations.

The confrontation unfolded on November 14 when HMAS Toowoomba was engaged in diving operations within Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone to clear fishing nets tangled in its propellers. Defense Minister Richard Marles disclosed that during these operations, a People’s Liberation Army Navy destroyer, identified as PLA-N destroyer (DDG-139), manoeuvred dangerously close to the Australian vessel.

Marles specified, “Soon after, it was detected operating its hull-mounted sonar in a manner that posed a risk to the safety of the Australian divers who were forced to exit the water.” The divers, sustaining minor injuries, were attributed to the sonar activity of the Chinese destroyer, according to medical evaluations.

Despite Australia’s immediate response and raised concerns, the Chinese embassy in Australia did not immediately provide a response or clarification regarding the incident.

Asserting the country’s stance, Marles emphasized the expectation for all nations, including China, to conduct their military operations professionally and ensure the safety of the personnel involved. Emphasizing the paramount importance of safeguarding Australian service members, Marles reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to their security.

This latest incident underscores escalating tensions in the Indo-Pacific region amid China’s increasing influence, exemplified by recent strategic advancements with nations like the Solomon Islands. In response to China’s growing regional presence, Australia, in close alliance with the United States, conducted extensive military exercises involving over 30,000 troops earlier this year, signaling a concerted effort to counterbalance China’s expanding influence in the region.
