Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasised the critical nature of Australia’s strategic relations with India, underlining their significance in maintaining a balance of power globally, especially in light of China’s rapid military advancements.

During her visit to New Delhi for the 2+2 ministerial dialogue, Wong cautioned about China’s unprecedented military modernisation efforts, expressing concerns over the lack of transparency in its scale and pace of military development.

Speaking at an event at Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College, Wong stressed the importance of Australia’s partnership with India, citing it as pivotal for maintaining the strategic balance of power in the region. Australia and India, alongside the US and Japan, are part of the Quad, a strategic coalition seen as a counterweight to China’s expansionist activities in the Indo-Pacific.

Wong reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific’s freedom and openness, advocating for partnerships that prevent domination by any single power. She reiterated that a free and open Indo-Pacific is essential and rooted in principles of sovereignty.

Highlighting India’s crucial role in the region’s strategic balance, Wong emphasised the need for mutual strategic reassurance and military risk reduction measures, encouraging cooperation in this realm.

The Australian Foreign Minister’s discussions with her Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, as part of the Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue, underscored the growing alignment between the two nations. This meeting follows Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles’ earlier remarks, acknowledging China as a significant security concern for both India and Australia and stressing the urgency for collaboration, particularly in enhancing maritime domain awareness.

Wong’s visit and the ongoing dialogue between Australia and India signal a deeper convergence of interests, reflecting a shared commitment to regional stability and security in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges, particularly China’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.
