Bengaluru, Karnataka, February 13, 2024: Adish Aggarwala, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), has written to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud of India, asking for suo motu action against farmers participating in the “Delhi Chalo” protest march.

The Indian Chief Justice, DY Chandrachud, has received a letter from the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) asking for suo motu action against farmers participating in the “Delhi Chalo” protest march.

Adish Aggarwala, the president of the SCBA, wrote to the Chief Justice, pleading with him to consider the case of “erring farmers” who were going from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana to participate in a major demonstration in Delhi.

He has asked that no adverse orders be imposed if lawyers cannot attend owing to the agitation, as he has raised worries that the protest may interrupt court procedures.

With over 200 farmers’ unions mobilising for the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, the Centre is pressured to comply with several requests. A legislative guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops, complete debt forgiveness, farmer pensions, and the execution of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations are a few of these.

Security has been tightened at Delhi’s borders in advance of the demonstration on February 13. The police have put up barricades and turned down the internet in several areas. To preserve law and order, Section 144 has been enforced at the borders of Uttar Pradesh.

Huge concrete blocks, containers, concertina wires, and nails have been used to erect multiple layers of barricades around the entry points to the nation’s capital. Traffic jams and security precautions were observed, making it difficult for drivers to commute between Delhi and the NCR towns.
